The President of the Internet gets paid like one … makes $1.5 Million Per Year from Podcasting [Video]

laportePodcast pioneer Leo Laporte gave a talk at the Online News Association Conference in San Francisco on Friday, giving insights into the future of media coupled with anecdotes from his work in television and radio. The keynote, entitled “Lunch with Leo”, runs 40 minutes, but it’s well worth the time if you’re involved in online media and broadcasting.

The most interesting tidbit: Laporte’s TWiT (This Week in Tech) network, run from the basement of his house in Petaluma, does $1.5 million in revenue per year, doubling yearly. His costs, however, are more impressive: it only takes $350,000 per year to run the business with 7 employees.

The video of Laporte’s speech is embedded below.

I think the cost of running the business just went up a few bucks. Leo is making a killing!!

  1. I’m guessing you’re not seeing the whole balance sheet there.

As in, I bet the $1.5M is gross revenue, including in-kind donations for bandwidth. Most of that money never goes to the cottage… it’s all just a vendor eating their own costs in exchange for their name.

I’m also betting it includes Tech Guy on weekends, which is a decently-waged commercial broadcast that Leo hosts.

And I’d also bet the $350K doesn’t include his revenue shares to show hosts. That’s just the “at the cottage” labor.

Also, it’s not out of the “basement of his house”. The TWiT Cottage is walking distance from Leo’s home, but is not co-located or adjacent.

Disclaimer – he pays me a bit as a show host, when we have a sponsor. When we don’t have a sponsor, he loses money on the show, and I also get nothing but more recognition (and smarter).
